City wrapping up Manenberg road rehabilitation project

Earlier this week, Councillor Rob Quintas, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, accompanied by project manager Taabish Samaai, visited Manenberg to assess the City’s major road rehabilitation project, which started in May and is now nearing completion.

‘I would like to thank Manenberg residents and road users for their patience and cooperation over the past eight months. This project prioritised the rehabilitation of ageing concrete roads and the improvement of pedestrian facilities to ensure safer, more accessible neighbourhood streets. The original concrete surfaces have been replaced with long-lasting asphalt, and the sidewalks and verges have been upgraded to fully surfaced standards,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Over 1,3 kilometres of road repairs were completed along multiple routes, including parts of Olifants Road, Nahoon Street, Vygekraal Road, Ohio Avenue, Thames Avenue and Marico Street.

‘We have also implemented speed humps and other traffic-calming measures to help reduce speeding, along with universal access upgrades at intersections to improve safety for wheelchair users and vulnerable pedestrians. Importantly, the project also supported local employment, with 14 EPWP workers contributing to the work on the ground,’ added Councillor Quintas.

The rehabilitation of roads in Manenberg is expected to be completed in early December this year, signifying another milestone in strengthening mobility and safety in Manenberg while affirming the City’s commitment to keeping Cape Town moving.
